Chapter 15

I RUSH BACK to the hospital as we take a break in the proceedings. I’m torn between my duty to the people I have talked to over the past two months and my family. I wish my life could be simple, but it is not—not in any shape or form. I’m still reeling from the questioning of my previous witness, and David being awake is conflicting to me too. I don’t know whether or not I am happy or angry.

When I get back to the hospital, Jessica is waiting for me at the front door.

“I don’t have long,” I say.

“I couldn’t stay in there for a moment longer,” she says. “Or I would have said something that I would have regretted.”

“Is he okay?” I ask.

“He’s awake but groggy, but the doctor says that he is going to make a full recovery.”

“Then, I’m going to say something that I’m going to regret,” I say. I storm into the hospital with Jessica following close behind. We both make our way straight for his room and find him half-asleep in the bed.

“What the hell were you thinking?” I demand.

He blinks in the bed, trying to wake from his stupor and mostly managing to. “Oh, hey, Zoe. Thanks for coming to see me.”

How selfish can you be, David?”

“Yeah, yeah.” He starts, pushing himself up in the bed a little. He takes the glass of water from the table beside the bed and drinks some through the straw. “I didn’t mean to do it.”

“Didn’t mean to do it? Don’t give me that. Come on, you meant to do this, and you did it! Don’t you have anything to say for yourself? You haven’t even said sorry to us!”

“All right, all right,” says David. “Jeez, I’m sorry, okay. Yeah, I messed up, but it’s me in the hospital because of it, not you.”

“No, but I have to clean up your mess again. I’m supposed to be at work, and instead, I have to come down here to make sure that my brother is not dead.”

“Would be easier if I was, probably,” says David.

“Oh, poor you,” I say. “Yeah, maybe it would be easier, but don’t pull the pity card. I’m glad that you are alive. We both are, but you are supposed to be our older brother, so start acting like it. Or start acting like someone we don’t need to worry about twenty-four-seven.”

David stares down at his feet, poking out of the blanket at the bottom of the bed. He’s waiting for me to
